A quieter place to write.

diyalamp is an open-source Markdown writing project for macOS. You can try its free browser notebook today: write directly in rendered notes, organize pages, keep two notes beside each other, and export Markdown.

The Java desktop app is in development. Substack publication, storage in your own CockroachDB Cloud account, and retrieval across notes are planned.

Which writing tool fits your work?

If you are looking for an alternative to Obsidian, Notion, Coda, Typora, or Bear, start with the kind of work you want to do. A quiet writing surface and a team workflow platform solve different problems.

Obsidian ↗

A local notes and knowledge workspace with optional Sync and Publish services. The core app is free.

Consider diyalamp if you want to follow a smaller, open-source Markdown writing project and try a simple rendered workspace.

Notion ↗

A broad workspace for teams to capture knowledge, find information, and automate work.

diyalamp focuses on individual writing and Markdown files, rather than replacing team databases and automation.

Coda / Superhuman Docs ↗

Collaborative documents, spreadsheets, and applications for teams. Coda now identifies itself as Superhuman Docs.

Choose the diyalamp direction for focused notes and portable Markdown, rather than an all-in-one team platform.

Typora ↗

A Markdown reader and writer with live preview that removes the separate source/preview workflow.

diyalamp shares the goal of rendered writing and adds a free browser workspace you can inspect and explore.

Bear ↗

A Markdown notes app for Mac, iPhone, and iPad, with tags, export, and optional Pro features.

diyalamp's desktop direction is macOS first and open source. Its browser notebook is available now.

What can you use in diyalamp now?

  • Rendered Markdown editing with slash commands.
  • Multiple note tabs and side-by-side writing and reading.
  • Local browser saving, note organization, and Markdown export.
  • No account required for the browser notebook.

Browser storage belongs to this browser and can be cleared by its settings. Export important notes to keep a separate copy.

Is there a macOS download?

The new Java Markdown desktop app is still being built. The browser workspace demonstrates the writing experience today. Follow the repositories for the desktop app and website to see the implementation and current progress.
